Five for Friday { Back to School }

This whole back-to-school thing is getting to me. I'm exhausted and I'm pretty sure the bottoms of my feet are bruised from all of the standing. I'm not even ashamed to admit that I will absolutely be wearing sneakers with my jeans today... #grandmastatus

I'm linking up with Kacey for my favorite linky party but I'm keeping it short and sweet today (just like me).

My first Donors Choose project was funded on Saturday!!! My document camera actually arrived at school yesterday, but I haven't had time to do anything with it yet.

I am using Class Dojo this year and am LOVING it. The kids are loving it too. We are only 4 days in, but I think making the switch was a great move.

I reached 1500 followers on Instagram yesterday and am currently having a giveaway!

No, your eyes aren't playing tricks on you. I am giving away 100 grand. *wink*
See my Instagram for details.

My Pinterest project of the week was to take pictures of my students and use them to label their book boxes. I am IN LOVE with how they turned out. They are so stinkin cute!!!!! If only you could see their faces!!

Thank goodness for a 3-day weekend! After this first week of school, I actually am in need of a 30-day weekend. Just saying.

I'm going to Atlanta to visit some of my favorite people and to cheer on the Crimson Tide at the Chick-fil-A kickoff game. ROLL TIDE ROLL!

First Day of School!

Today was the first day of school and I lived to tell about it! I also fed myself AND am now blogging.

I'd say today was a success, other than the fact that I just popped some Ibuprofen to numb the pain in my legs and my roommate / coworker / live-in comedian is moaning about how she needs a cane and some orthopedic shoes.

Don't tell her I told you that.

Today was an absolute BLUR and naturally I didn't take enough pictures.

We started by reading Froggy Goes to School. It was a great introduction to rules and procedures.

After Froggy, we studied our school's behavioral matrix and brainstormed ways that we can be respectful, responsible, and safe while at school. I also taught my new students how to use sticky notes appropriately so that they don't lose their stickiness!

Next we did the polar opposite of rule-following by having a "snowball fight" at school!
(Shoutout to Karen H. for the suggestion on my giveaway post last month!)

Students wrote 3 facts about themselves on a piece of paper but did not write their names. Then we made "snowballs" by crumpling up our papers. Students had the length of one song to have their snowball "fight." When the song ended, they unrolled and read their snowballs aloud one at a time and we tried to guess who wrote it. We all loved it!

Then we graphed our First Day Feelings...

The excited column went all the way to the top of the white board before I had to move the chart in order to use my eBeam. YAY! (I'll admit the results may have been a little skewed due to the fact that we just threw balls of paper at each other in school...)

We spent the rest of the morning playing a special version of Four Corners. They LOVED it and it was a great way for me to quickly get to know my new babies!!

After lunch and recess, I read aloud Tacky the Penguin

We talked about how Tacky was disrespectful and some things he could have done differently. Then I gave the kids some independent work to do so I could start math assessments.
(REALLY? Testing on the first day of school? YES. Don't get me started.)

I was impressed with most of my students' writing. YAY! Actually, when we played Four Corners, writing is what most of my students indicated that they needed to improve the most on this year. Interesting!

We wrapped up the day by reflecting on our first day together and discussing our future plans, hopes, and dreams for second grade. We whipped up this quick anchor chart of things they can say instead of saying "I can't."

It's ugly. Of course I'll be remaking it.

Last, I shared some words of wisdom with them:

I wish Kid President was in my class!!

I can't believe it's over already! I love my new students. Hopefully I'll still be saying that in a few months, and hopefully the rest of the year will be as fun as today was!

I can't believe my brain is still working and that my eyes are still open. Sweet dreams, my friends.

Classroom Reveal!!! (and linky party)

It was a loooong week back at work. I've been crazy busy - and exhausted - but am excited to finally publish my classroom reveal!!!

Let's start at the beginning.

I really needed a bulletin board here. Last year I made a faux board, but I couldn't staple into it. This year I bought some little cork square. Ta-da! I'm sure they will fill up soon with calendars, reminders, and more.

How cute is this?

My paper sorter (students mailboxes) is new this year. So excited!

This area is most of my classroom library. The empty wooden shelving is used to store my math centers. All of our reading anchor charts will cover up that blank wall!

I love this new setup. The board behind my desk is two filing cabinets pushed back to back. The table in front of my desk will be the turn-in area. I have ribbon strung across my windows to display student work.

(Forgive me for forgetting to unroll the American flag!! It kept hitting me in the face!!)

Ignore my messy tables. The rectangle table will be my writing center, and the kidney table is where I pull small groups.

I'm loving the new washi tape that I used to block off my board this year!

We will fill up those blank yellow rectangles with sticky notes on the first day of school.

These are the kids' backpack cabinets and cubbies. My word wall is new this year, too!

Here's the whole room, taken from my doorway:

My huge windows make it so difficult to take decent pictures of my room!

Did you see some things you liked around the room?

Let's Talk About Me

I'm linking up with Blog Hoppin' for Teacher Week 2014!

10 Fun Facts About Yours Truly

1  - I'm a second year, second grade teacher in Charlotte, NC. My kids come a week from today. Cue panic attack.

2 -  I have a major sweet tooth. (Thanks, dad.) My two vices are candy and Coca Cola classic. I also love chocolate milk. I am a child.

3 -  I am overly competitive. Like, if you want to get to know me on a too-deep level, initiate a game of rummy. Or Monopoly. Or say "I'll race you home."

4 -  My middle name has been passed down four generations. My great-grandfather had to make up a middle name for himself when he enlisted in the Army. They wouldn't let him enroll without one! That middle name was given to my grandfather and then to me. How cool is that story?

5 -  I like to eat (obviously) but I do NOT like to cook. I hate the prep. I CAN cook, though. I make mean green beans. My favorite meal is chicken parmesan, but I've never tried to make it myself.

6 -  I'm currently a victim of wanderlust. I've been to 4 countries (not near enough) and 22 states. I will have visited all 50 states someday. I collect mugs from places I've visited. See this post.

7 -  I loooovveee football. It's a side effect of attending the University of Alabama and I'm convinced it's also genetic. A love for football runs in my family as much as competitiveness does. (Guess who's going to win the family fantasy league this year? ME.)

8 -  Reading is my favorite relaxing activity. I make time for it during the school year, but it's hard! This summer I read The Fault in Our Stars, The Goldfinch, The Best of Me, The Martian, Let's Pretend This Never Happened, and Sharp Objects... just to name a few. I plan to write my own book someday called The Gym Diaries about all of the crazy people I have to deal with in my gym. (Just kidding. Maybe.)

9 -  I'm a perfectionist and have a little OCD. I'm pretty sure my coworker and wall-sharer, Jess, thinks I'm insane. I often have her look at my stuff for her to reassure me that everything is perfect enough and that I shouldn't redo it.

10 -  My favorite movie is 500 Days of Summer (followed closely by Grease) and my favorite TV series is The OC. I've developed a love-hate relationship with reality TV and enjoy watching the Kardashians and HGTV while I'm on the treadmill. (P.S. I'm an A-list celebrity on Kim Kardashian Hollywood. A word of advice: DO NOT download the game if you haven't already. It's addictive. If you have already, may the odds be ever in your favor.)

WHEW. I just reread everything I wrote (because perfectionists have to proofread everything) and that was exhausting. I wear myself out. Time for a nap.

(Fact #11: I love naps.)

Five for Friday - The Final Countdown

I woke up at 6:30 this morning. I rolled over to go back to sleep (because this is still my SUMMER, people!) and instead, my mind starting running and I couldn't stop thinking about...
SCHOOL.

I'm going in today to work in my classroom. My to-do list is at least a mile long.

When I went in on Wednesday, the first day of the school being open since June, my room looked like this:

SIGH.

Let's rewind a little.

Last week, I was in sunny Florida for my last "vacation" of summer. I went to see my dad at his new place and he definitely spoiled me!

Okay, back to reality.

That's enough for #3. Tina speaks for herself.

Seriously, I am really excited to meet my new babies. I have my list, and the kids should have gotten their letters in the mail yesterday! My Open House is on Thursday. Eeek! I have SO much to do until then... like eat as much Chinese takeout as I can before I have to start packing my lunch again.

IT'S ALMOST FOOTBALL SEASON!!!!!!

That being said, I need your help. I need a good (and clever and funny and possibly girly) fantasy football team name. It could have something to do with teaching, or not.

If I end up using your team name idea, you win a free product of your choice from my TPT store.
Okay... GO!

Meet the Teacher Linky

Hey y'all! I'm Kristin. I grew up in Atlanta, GA then moved to sweet home Alabama for college. After graduating from The University of Alabama in 2013, I moved to Charlotte, NC for a new adventure. I am about to enter my second year of teaching 2nd grade - my favorite grade!

THESE ARE A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS...

Tervis Tumblers. Alabama football. Football season in general. Maps, new and old. Bodies of water. Views from airplanes. Friends that have become my sisters. My wonderful boyfriend (I know you're reading this; #sappy). The Bobby Bones Show (basically my other boyfriend). Saturday mornings. Mindless TV shows. Snail mail. Girl Scout cookie coffee creamer - yum!!

ROLL TIDE ROLL!

IF YOU WEREN'T A TEACHER, WHAT WOULD YOU WANT TO BE?

An anchorwoman! I started college as a communications major, but switched to education after a semester. Teaching has always been "what I want to be when I grow up." My ultimate goal is to be a teacher in a hospital school to work with long-term patients.

THREE LITTLE WORDS THAT DESCRIBE YOU.

Perfectionist. Loyal. Wanderlusting!

(Yes I made that last word up.)

FINISH THE SENTENCE, "________,  SAID NO TEACHER EVER!!"

"The respect and salary I receive matches and reflects the work that I do," SAID NO TEACHER EVER!!

Q: IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY AND YOU CAN INVITE ANYONE {DEAD OR ALIVE} TO THE PARTY. WHO ARE YOU INVITING?

In addition to friends and family...
Sophia Bush, Nick Saban, the cast of Modern Family, and the Backstreet Boys.

Q: IF SOMEONE WROTE A BOOK ABOUT YOUR LIFE, WHAT WOULD BE THE TITLE?

 ἀγάπη

Q:YOU GET TO PICK ONE SUPERPOWER. WHAT IS IT?

 Teleporting. Absolutely.

Q: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE QUOTE OR SAYING?

Q: IF YOU HAD TO SING ONE SONG ON AMERICAN IDOL, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

"The Way You Make Me Feel" by Michael Jackson. It wouldn't be pretty, but I would love every second of it, and I'd probably incorporate some improvised rap.

Q: ARE YOU A MORNING PERSON OR A NIGHT OWL?

I'd say I'm a night owl. However, I'm one of those people that can't function without 8 hours of sleep, so I go to bed at grandma o'clock on weeknights.

Q: WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE RESOURCE THAT YOU'VE CREATED IN YOUR TPT SHOP?

Q: SHARE SOMETHING WE MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU!

I'm a cancer survivor, so that's my go-to cause. I was on the executive board of my school's Relay for Life in college and I love to find ways to give back. My history is the reason I want to be a hospital-based teacher! :)

I can't wait to "meet" all of you! xo
